Receiving a dental implant is a bit of a procedure, and after you’ve received your implant you’ll want to know just how to take care of your mouth in an effort to alleviate pain, save yourself from infection, and keep your new implant healthy. A few dental implant aftercare tips that you should keep in mind are:
- Rinse with salt water – A salt water solution of 1 teaspoon of salt to 8 ounces of warm water will be your new best friend for the first few days after receiving an implant. What rinsing with this salt water solution can do is provide you with a way to alleviate discomfort and save yourself from infection in one simple step. Rinsing for about 30 seconds 2 to 3 times a day can kill bacteria, while calming any soft tissue that may be irritated or inflamed.
- Stick to soft foods – Right after receiving a dental implant, you won’t want to have a snacking session on anything chewy or super crunchy. Your soft tissue will be irritated and you may be experiencing some swelling, so you’ll want to keep things nice and easy for those first few days post-procedure. Some foods we often recommend are soups, ice cream, milkshakes, and mashed potatoes.
- Over the counter pain medication – While many patients don’t feel any discomfort after a dental implant procedure, some do, and in these instances it’s best to have an over the counter pain reliever on hand. Something with a bit of acetaminophen or ibuprofen can help immensely in keeping any discomfort you may be feeling under control.
While an easy procedure, receiving a dental implant is a procedure, and it is one that can give you a bit of discomfort. In an effort to help your mouth to heal, you’ll want to take it easy and keep infection in mind for the first few days to a week post-implant.
