When one is considering whether or not to go with dental implants or dentures one will want to take several thoughts into consideration.
Dentures are a solid plate that fits into the mouth and covers the palate or the roof of the mouth. The palate offers the patient the opportunity to taste their foods and drinks.
If something should get between the denture material and the palate it can cause irritation and be painful. In some cases, the patient isn’t able to wear their dentures for a short period of time while the palate heals. Going without ones teeth can be embarrassing and cause a lot of social stigma.
When one choose dental implants instead of dentures, one will have the tooth implanted into the jaw bone and the tooth will remain there. Although this isn’t a real tooth, it looks and appears to be very realistic and most people will never realize that the patient is wearing a dental implant.
Another advantage to dental implants is that the patient is able to taste their foods and whatever they choose to drink without wondering if the taste is off or if the food is to their liking.
Since dental implants look and feel like a real tooth there is less adjustment period for the patient as well. The tooth is just as strong if not stronger than a real tooth. There is no chance of decay since the tooth is actually artificial and the patient will feel more comfortable wearing them since they will not have to be removed. They may occasionally require a minor adjustment but these should be very minimal when compared to dentures.
If properly placed and cared for, dental implants can last the patient for the rest of their life. Dentures are generally replaced every few years due to wear and tear.
